Explore around the Harp at Old Radnor
There is so much to do and see in this area, do stay a while and explore! Our nearest towns are Presteigne, which was the former county town of Radnorshire and is home to the award-winning Judge’s Lodging museum, an annual international classical music festival in August and a thriving arts and crafts community, and Kington, formerly an agricultural and industrial centre, which hosts a weekly market, an annual walking festival in September and a Christmas food festival.
Also within easy reach are the towns of Knighton, Builth Wells (home to the Royal Welsh Showground and the wealth of events which take place there), Rhayader (and the spectacular lakes of the Elan Valley), Hay-on-Wye with its annual world class literary festival, Ludlow, Leominster, Brecon and the cathedral city of Hereford.
There are a huge range of outdoor activities available locally, including walking, cycling, clay pigeon shooting, fishing, canoeing, horseriding, birdwatching and golf on England’s highest 18 hole course at Kington. There are great places nearby to try rally driving, go-karting and 4×4 off-roading and the area is popular with vintage and classic car enthusiasts; we have hosted a number of gatherings for owners of classes of cars from vintage Bugattis to Alfa Romeo Giuliettas to MGs.
But there are plenty of less strenuous things to do as well. There are some beautiful historic churches nearby including our village church of St Stephens with its ancient font and superb carved rood screen, one of the finest mediæval churches in Wales just a few steps from our door. You could explore the black and white villages of Herefordshire just over the border or visit one of the wealth of wonderful local gardens, such as Hergest Croft, Bryans Ground, Westonbury Water Mill and Rhodds Farm, many of which have tea rooms attached!
We are in an area with minimal light pollution and when the weather is clear the night skies are breathtaking. You can also visit the Spaceguard Centre at Knighton.
